The Challenge: The Litarena website is a collection of literary portals.
The Classic Adventure, Crime, Thriller and Spy Section
Here you will find, among other things, discussions of Rudyard Kipling's spy novel, Kim, Graham Greene's enigmatic story of betrayal, deceit and revolution in Haiti, The Comedians, and Erskine Childers' classic maritime adventure, The Riddle of The Sands.
The African SectionHere you will find an African heritage section which specialises in antique books from a golden age of English literature when Olaudah Equiano's spellbinding autobiography was a revolutionary bestseller. Going back in time to read his work brings us into contact with Daniel Defoe, Jonathan Swift and many other long gone writers. Professor Helena Woodard of the University of Texas, in Austin, takes a look at this period. And we review her conclusions in the African heritage section of the website. To read deeply into the African section you will need to contact the website administrator for an access code, however, an overview of what is to be found there is freely available.
The New Writers' SectionLitarena also makes a special effort to meet new writers and read their work. Over the years it has discovered several unknown authors' books, most notably T Isilwath's Heart of a Fox, which is a science-fiction fantasy set in Japan's feudal past, Christine Blake's A Woman Redeemed, which is a captivating biographical account of the life of Mary Magdalene and Lloyd Lofthouse's My Splendid Concubine, which, like Christine's book, is also a fictional biography of a real historical figure. In this case Lloyd Lofthouse writes about the most senior Western civil servant ever to have been employed by the emperors of China.
